Secane man charged with hit-and-run from New Year’s Day

Posted on January 5th, 2012 No Comments

Matthew Cooper, 24, of Secane, was charged with a hit-and-run on New Year’s Day by the Delaware police after leaving John McManus, 34, of Collingdale, critically injured.

McManus was the designated driver after New Year’s Eve and got out of his car in front of his apartment complex when he was hit by Cooper in a Ford 500.  It was only when Cooper saw police inspecting the damaged vehicle (which had a white towel covering the windshield, a plastic bag covering the bumper, and had the license plates removed) after they received a tip that he approached police and said “he became distracted and struck an unknown object, but did not stop to check what it was.”

Cooper was released on $500,000 unsecured bail as long as he stays with his brother who is a SEPTA officer.

McManus’s wife, Misty, stated, “He’s still in critical condition, but the prognosis is seeming to look okay…the chest tubes might possibly be coming out. He will stay on the ventilator and sedation because he’s healing a lot better that way.”

Posted on December 1st, 2011 No Comments

Brandon Valites, 29, of Wilmington, was issued multiple citations by police after a car crash Sunday night.

Valites drove his 2010 Hyundai Accent south on State Route 7 (Limestone Road) just north of Main Street in Stanton when he struck the rear of a tractor trailer driven by Bryan Vachon, 31, of Montgomery, AL.  Police accused Valites of driving under the influence of alcohol, careless driving, failure to use a seatbelt, failure to maintain a lane of travel, and making an unsafe lane change in connection with the crash.

The force of the crash trapped Valites in his vehicle, and he was later transported to Christiana Hospital with serious injuries.  Vachon was left unharmed.
