About Rear End Car Crashes

June 13, 2018

Rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of motor vehicle accidents in the United States. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), of the 5.7 million auto accidents that occurred in 2013, 32 percent—or nearly one-third—were rear-end collisions. From 2012 to 2014, the percentage of rear-end crashes was even higher, accounting for almost half of all two-vehicle accidents.

Most rear-end accidents are caused by a combination of failing to pay attention to the traffic just ahead and following too closely. A 2007 study conducted by the NHTSA found that a shocking 87 percent of rear-end crashes were caused by drivers who were distracted or otherwise not paying attention to the traffic in front of them.

Sadly, Delaware isn't immune from this problem. In 2016 alone, following too closely was a factor in more than 3,550 collisions, which injured nearly 700 and resulted in thousands of dollars in property damage costs, according to the Delaware State Police.

Years of research from the NHTSA shows that more people are injured in rear-end accidents than any other type of crash. Additionally, these types of accidents kill more than 1,700 people each year. Common injuries associated with rear-end collisions include:

  • Contusions
  • Lacerations
  • Strains and sprains
  • Whiplash
  • Back injuries, including herniated discs
  • Broken bones

Some rear-end accident injuries may not present themselves right away or may worsen over time—which makes seeking immediate medical treatment and following the doctor's recommendations essential to the outcome of any personal injury insurance claim or lawsuit filed as a result of the collision.
