Workers’ Compensation May Provide Mileage Reimbursement For Medical-Related Travel

Many people are unaware of all the benefits they are eligible to receive in workers’ compensation cases. It is well known that wage benefits are provided through programs like temporary partial or total disability. However, those who have been injured on the job are also eligible to receive additional compensation, including mileage compensation. Mileage compensation pays an amount based on the distance traveled for every medical trip taken related to the illness or injury.

Mileage Reimbursement

As of January 1, 2015, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows workers to receive up to 23 cents for every mile traveled to appointments related to the treatment of a workplace injury or illness. Compensation includes round trips to any of the following places:

  • Doctors’ offices
  • Hospitals
  • Physical therapy facilities
  • Pharmacies
  • Diagnostics facilities

Driving to these facilities on a routine basis can add up—both financially and through the wear and tear on a vehicle. Injured workers may not have to bear the entire additional financial burdens associated with travel to these places for tests, treatments, or picking up medication.

Keep Records and Receipts to Support Mileage Claims

To receive mileage reimbursement benefits, it is important to keep a record of all travel. Keep a log of the mileage for each qualifying appointment, and retain receipts for public transportation, tolls, and parking that may qualify for reimbursement. This information will aid in filling out the mileage reimbursement that will be submitted to the workers’ compensation board.
